In Dragonvale, you eventually need to breed new dragons using the dragons that you presently have. If you’re a beginner in the field of dragon breeding, you just came to the right place. In this Dragonvale Dragons Breeding Guide, you’ll discover the different aspects of breeding.
You can start breeding dragons by the time you reach level 7. Why? Because the Breeding Cave becomes available at this level. Get this from the market and you’re ready to breed your first dragon offspring.
In order to start breeding, you just need to tap on the Breeding Cave. Afterwards, a screen with two sides will appear. You are free to select a pair of dragons by choosing a dragon on the left and on the right. Furthermore, you can experiment with different combinations. However, if you’re trying to breed a particular dragon, you can refer to our Dragonvale Dragons category. In each dragon guide found in that category, you will find tried and tested combinations for breeding a particular type of dragon.
You will probably notice that some dragons cannot be matched with another. If dragons you’re planning to match have opposing elements, it is not possible to combine them. Below is the list of the opposite dragons:
- Fire and Cold
- Earth and Air
- Lightning and Water
- Plant and Metal
In this Dragonvale Dragons Breeding Guide, we’ll also give you an idea of what you need to do after reaching a higher level. If you’re at level 13 and you have a good amount of gems, consider getting an Epic Breeding Island. Its function is similar to the Breeding Cave, but it has an additional advantage. When you’re trying to get limited edition dragons, rare dragons and opposite dragons (dragons that carry the opposing elements), you will have a bigger chance of breeding them with the Epic Breeding Island.
It is possible to upgrade the breeding places in Dragonvale. Once you upgrade, the total breeding time will decrease by 20%. Here are the available upgrades for your breeding places:
- The Breeding Cave can be upgraded to the Enchanted Breeding Cave. This will cost you 600 Dragonvale Gems.
- The Epic Breeding Island can be upgraded to the Epic Breeding Sanctuary. This will cost you 1,250 Gems.

Is it your first time breeding?
Try pressing incubate, unless it’s still loading, then you can either wait or you can use gems.

For Meg: You can put it in either the fire or earth habitat. When an egg has hatched, you click on Hatch and it will tell you which habitat(s) you can use.

When you breed two dragons, ie mud + blaze to try for a panlong does it matter how the mud or blaze were bred or is a blaze strictly air/ fire and mud = earth/water. Meaning my blaze was bred with butterfly (a/l/f) + mud (earth + water). Or does just the breeding dragons “genes”count? And nothing to do with how the blaze and mud were initially bred?
I breed an air and quake trying to get a sandstorm but got something with a 35 hr time…what could it be???
